Adrianna (21), her boyfriend Michael (22), and her second cousin Tristan (7 months). Michael is white, his family originates from Poland. Adrianna considers them a good fit. They have the same values and interests, both are in college and plan to join the Marines.
“Where I grew up, in Fort Collins, there are not a lot of Native Americans. All of my friends were white. And it’s not that easy to date a Native American guy. Especially within your own tribe: you would have to make sure that he’s not related to you. Even if someone turns out to be family of you seven generations back, it’s the same as to marry your first cousin.” This is considered a big taboo. “So we have to pretty much pull out a family tree when we talk to anyone from our tribe. I don’t know. It just doesn’t work. If you broke up, your business would be all over the community. I don’t want to have to deal with that.” A boyfriend from outside the tribe saves Adrianna a lot of drama.
