Taylor, hair dyed purple, escorts Candace at the dress rehearsal of the 61st Apple Blossom Cotillion. When Candace’s male partner bailed on her a few weeks before the performance, Taylor stepped in. The two girls both have been dancing for pleasure for years and are members of the same dance team. “We’re not dating,” Taylor explains. “Candace has a boyfriend, I’m single. We’re just good friends. There are obviously some people who are annoyed about it. It’s such a longstanding tradition to have the boys be escorts and the girls contestants. But it’s time to break some rules. I didn’t want to do the female part, because I was so uncomfortable with the hyper gender gap between the two. But in a tux, it’s sort of in between. What I like about the male part is we’re not being judged. We’re there to make the girls look good. And as a comic relief, we can go over the top, big! That sometimes means make your partner laugh in the middle of dances and just goof off with friends.” In the end Candace gets chosen as one of the members of the Apple Blossom Court.
